“Fighting King Coal: The Challenges
to Micromobilization in Central Appalachia”Environmental
Sociologist Shannon Bell will present findings from her recent book, Fighting King Coal. Through a case
study of the Central Appalachian coalfields, Bell's book examines an
understudied puzzle in social movement theory: why so few of the vast number of
people who suffer from industry-produced environmental hazards and pollution
rise up to participate in social movements aimed at bringing about
environmental justice and industry accountability. Free and open to the public.
