Socializing Spouses in Gabon: The Women of "The Petroleum Wives' Club of Port-Gentil"Lisa Shutt,
from UVA’s Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American & African
Studies, will examine the lives of the women who participate in The Petroleum
Wives’ Club of Port-Gentil. These women are outsiders—the wives or partners of
men with white collar jobs in the oil industry. Shutt will explore how the club
helps these women construct and reproduce a Western identity in a Central
African setting. Free and open to the public.
